Bigger Hearts for His Glory- Unit 25

Homeschooling is much better with a full coffee mug in the mornings!  That's what I'm claiming this week as we battle more of this icy and cold weather.   Only a day of melting snow all to get 7" more. Yay!  The kids were all overjoyed with the continuous flow of the white stuff!

Snow Fort
Recess outside in snow clothes was a hit all week!  The snow fort, sledding, and snowmen were a great way to spend the days after school.

In HoD, we learned about hopefulness.  The kids learned that it is better to have Godly knowledge & wisdom than rubies or silver.  Such an important lesson in life.  We often work so hard for material things and this verse was a wonderful reminder of the important things in life.  We listened to this song to remind us of our memory verse.  You can find the lyrics and song to 'More Precious that Silver' here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RjXVFDRqQk

This week we talked about Dame Shirley and learned of her long 5 month extended journey around South America on a vessel to California in search of gold.   She wrote letters about the mining camp in a journal.

We learned there were 3 routes to the California Gold.  Around South America, across the United States, and thru the Panama Route between North and South America.  There were hardships for each path.

We read about a great hunter named Kit Carson and his survival in the wild country toward California.  If you'd like to watch a documentary on youtube to learn more about Kit Carson you can find it here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLxsSGO2VWE  (Parents may want to preview this before showing children due to violence.) It's a long view but, what an interesting heroic figure and all the tragedy he experienced in his life.

We read about a brave story where Kit Carson encountered 2 bears and was able to keep hitting them with a branch in their weakest spot... their nose.  He eventually got them to run away.

The kids used paper towels to dab on paint to make it look like bear fur onto their bear shaped paper plate!

The bear masks had spring noses to remind us of their sensitive spot!  The kids really enjoyed this story and of course making the bear masks.

My 3 little Bears!

We also briefly introduced Abraham Lincoln.  We learned that his grandfather who was also, Abraham Lincoln was friends with Daniel Boone's family.   We read how the young boy was very poor and lived a rough childhood but, found hope in his books and readings.  He worked hard as a young boy and had several jobs.  This week we learned also that the North and South United States were beginning to struggle with their differences and the Union was formed.  The kids added 14  states and their capitals to our cards.

In our pioneer sampler book, we read about tickling trout or better known as catching fish with bare hands. The kids were impressed with this reading.  We completed our Science notebooking  and learned that because of the refraction of the light it can be hard to catch fish.  We learned that fish can hear well under the water.  The particles in the water are held closer together than in the air and  therefore make it sound louder in the water.

In Math, the little one is finding the value of n.  (ex.  n + 3 =  9)  She also is borrowing from 2 digits in her subtraction.   All 3 kids math knowledge and ability have greatly increased this year with CLE math workbooks.  I am surely thankful for their program.  The other 2 are learning about diameter, radius, and circumference.  The repetition each lesson has been good for their learning styles and we have been able to introduce new concepts while refreshing on their previous lessons.

We were able to check out Louisa May Alcott's ~ 'Little Women' from our library.  Which was the perfect way to spend a chilly afternoon after playing in the snow.  The kids were set on watching it since we recently in Unit 23 talked about the author Louisa May Alcott.  This will become a Christmas favorite for sure.  The kids really enjoyed it and my daughter has a new love for Louisa May Alcott.

We had a great week and hope you did too!
See you next week!
