Bigger Hearts for His Glory - Unit 4

Hello Everyone!
We had a lot of fun this week in Bigger Hearts for His Glory! We added the character trait TRUSTWORTHINESS to our character wall.

Character Trait Wall
Our verse this week was Proverbs 3:29-30.

The children learned this week that John Smith bartered to get the things that were important to him and the people of Jamestown. He bartered with the Indians and would trade trinkets and beads for food and furs.  The kids had the chance to barter their snacks. This was a fun, quick example of bartering and made a great snack break during reading time!

Bartering Snacks
We learned that it was hard to trust because some of the Indians were kind and others would attack. John Smith's life was saved when Chief Powhatans daughter, Pocohontas placed her head over John Smith.   Pocahontas cared for the people of Jamestown and often played with the other children there and brought them food.  John Smith became dear to her and later even called him her father.

We did an acrostic with POCAHONTAS. The kids were able to come up with these on their own.  We learned Pocahontas converted to Christianity and later married John Rolfe and had a son named Thomas.  She returned to England and lived to be 22.  She died of small pox.

We hope to visit Jamestown Homeschool Days again this year in the next couple weeks to learn more about the settlement.

Our marker art project was creating a reflective design pattern as a blanket.
We learned that the Indians made patterned blankets and we used a reflective pattern to design our Indian blankets too.

Our vocabulary words this week were:  idle, wigwams, and colony.  I have to admit I smiled when I saw the sentence using the word 'idle.'

The Arrow by Richard Henry Stoddard
In poetry, we read The Arrow by Richard Henry Stoddard. We learned about metaphors and were able to identify a metaphor in the poem.  Cursive writing is improving for our 3rd grader.

The kids were able to come up with a few on their own too.

We talked more about the world and continents.  We skipped the graham cracker geography project and decided to make a big chocolate chip cookie. This seemed easier than trying to bite the continents out of graham crackers. 😜

The kids used m&m's to make the continent shapes. It turned out great and it was yummy too!

The kids enjoyed this project of course and can all name the continents and oceans! Yay!

We finished reading Ben & Me with a final book report. The kids were able to tell each other about their favorite part in the book.  Amos was a favorite little mouse that often caused more trouble in Ben Franklins life. The children thought this book was funny!

In art this week, we learned about shading. We colored lightly and dark to look like 2 different colors.

The kids made patterns with their different shading techniques.

In Science, we talked more about sea animals. We learned about invertebrate and vertebrate and the kids drew pictures in their science journals.

Their drawings are so neat to see and are often very accurate!

Soccer practice began this week and our schedules are packed with practices and games now!  Dance starts next week for the little girl so we have just about  returned to our school year routine.

We hope everyone had a great week too.
Be blessed!
