Preparing & Res to Ref - Unit 3

Am I the only one or do we all have those days we question our abilities or our reasoning for why we are homeschooling in the first place?  Through the battles or tears there are so many moments of joy that we often forget to easily.  My Monday morning was brightened by my little one bringing me a Thank You balloon that she had conveniently recycled adding Best Teacher Ever in sharpie marker. This made my day!  I encourage you to remember the special moments, drawings, and sweet words  and let them be the strength that gets you through the down days.   We are all aware that the positive outweighs the negatives in the big picture.  The blessings of homeschooling our children are too many to count.

Preparing Hearts for His Glory

We learned that after the flood people built the Tower of Babel to be closer to the stars that they worshipped.  God mixed up their languages and spread the people throughout the land.  We added the Tower of Babel to our time line.

We read more about life in the Ice Age.  The kids loved grandfathers story about the great bear hunt! We learned that the woman prepared the furs, and the meat for the winter. They had a great feast and praised the Lord for the success.

We  learned that cave art was a way to remember their hunts.  The kids history project was to crumple and crumple... and crumple some more to make cave art paper from a brown paper bag.

Next, they drew bull onto their "cave wall"  and colored it in with black, brown, and orange sharpies.  (We opted out of the paint.)  These turned out great. I love that the kids all have such unique styles and interpretations.

We read about how cave art was drawn onto walls with feathers to remember their hunt and all that they had to be thankful for.  Sometimes, they would blow crushed powdered rock through a hollow reed to make a stencil of their handprints.

The kids had another opportunity for a written narrative this week and although still painful it was surprisingly much better than the week before!  I still helped them along with the questions provided in the guide.  Don't give up if you're struggling... it is getting better! There is hope!

Another great drawing of a mammoth from my little big kid. He has really improved with his artwork this year.

In Science the kids are learning more about the Arctic Tundra.  They drew the life cycle of mosquitos.

We learned that insects make chemicals in their bodies that act like antifreeze so they can survive long, cold winters.

Our science experiment was to test to see which would freeze fastest. The salt in the water was like an antifreeze. We checked the water every 15 minutes to check the results.  The plain water froze first.  The sugar water froze next.

This week our vocabulary words were sought, North Star, and stalking.  I was impressed the little big one was able to get them all into one sentence! LOL!

* I sought out to find the North Star but someone was stalking me. *

Res to Reformation

The project this week was to make an old parchment paper using a wrinkled paper soaked in tea to stain making it look old.

Next he wrote the verse in Greek and then again in English.

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but, lose your own soul?
Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 16:26

In Science, we learned that Mercury has a lot of craters on its surface due to the asteroids that hit it.

Mercury has an elliptical orbit and is very hot being so close to the sun but can be very cold.

This week our Shakespeare reading was Midsummer Night's Dream.

I also had our big one start using a gripper on his pencil so he hopefully will learn how to hold his pencil correctly. This makes such an improvement on his handwriting.

Geometry is going well.  Math U See has been a great addition to our homeschooling year!

Hope everyone had a great week! Looking forward to moving on next week!
See you then!
